I bet you landed here because you love to travel and are looking for a way to create more flexibility in your life. Am I right? And if you’re like most of my readers, you are curious, thirsty for adventure, and unwilling to spend your life in a traditional 9-5 job. So you and I already have a lot in common!
The reason I started Flipping Moons was to help inspire, support, and nudge people like you toward a flexible life full of travel and freedom. And for those already adventuring around the world, I want to help you have an even better experience doing do. My intention is to share my family’s journey of stepping away from the traditional 9-5 grind toward a life with more choice, freedom, and fun! And I always do this in an honest, authentic, and lighthearted way. I have actually been told I’m “direct” and “say it like it is,” and to me, that’s the only way to tell the story!
It’s hard to know where to start when you land on a new website, with so much information and different pages. So this “start here” page is to help you get going.
The Flipping Moons Family
A couple key things about the Flipping Moons family:
- Our family is made up of Kate (me), Luke, and our two little munchkins, Nola (3) & Arwen (2)
- We used to have high earning (and high stress) jobs, owned a house and a lot of stuff.
- We sold our house. Have no fixed address. Got rid of most possessions.
- We now mainly work for ourselves and have several contract-based work arrangements, all done completely remotely.
- And most importantly, we’ve started a new journey of slow-travel, living minimally, and working as digital nomads.
Sounds lovely, but what does that actually mean?
Slow-Travel: this is a way of traveling that allows significant time to explore each destination thoroughly rather than attempting to squeeze as many sights or cities as possible into each trip. Since March, we’ve spent 3 months in Guanajuato, Mexico, 3 months in rural central British Columbia Canada, and have 3 months planned for Valencia, Spain in the fall of 2017. This is all piggy-backed in years of backpacking in Europe, Central America, and South America before we had kids. I’d say we are “slow-traveling.”
Living Minimally: this is about focusing on experiences rather than possessions, becoming aware and cautious of consumerism and marketing, and reducing the material items we purchase or strive to own so that we can live according to our values. We are not anti-consumption in general, but we want to be extra-mindful about purchases, take good care of the little that we own, and resist the idea that we need more. All in the name of enjoying life.
Digital Nomads: these are people who use technologies (usually involving the internet) to earn a living so that they can enjoy more freedom and flexibility in life. For us, our income is entirely generated remotely, which allows us to travel and work (as long as there is good internet, that is!).
